Competitors should make themselves familiar with the rules in advance of the event.

Click here to visit the BTF website and view a full set of rules.

Below are listed the most important rules to note.

  • Helmets; Must be worn and fastened before you remove your bike from the racking and until you place it back on the racking before your second run.
  • Drafting on the bike leg is not allowed. Duathlon is an individual endurance event and competitors must not get unfair assistance from friends or team mates. There must be at least 7m between cyclists on the road. If you are overtaken you must drop back at least that distance before trying to regain your place. Marshals will be out on the course and will report incidents of drafting.
  • Transition area;
    • is strictly for competitors and officials only. This is for safety and security. Please attach the bike sticker to your bike, suggest around the rear brake cable casing (it's easier to get off afterwards). This will be checked against your race number when you remove your bike from transition after the race.
    • No cycling in the transition area. The mount/dismount points will be pointed out at the race briefing. Helmets shoes and other equipment must be stored neatly at your racking spot so as not to impede other competitors. Transition space is limited only bring what you need for the race into transition.
    • No marking of the transition area is allowed and will be removed. All race numbers must be shown to the transition marshals before any kit or bikes can be taken from the transition area.
    • When entering or leaving transition while the race is in progress, please respect other competitors and give them time and space to continue their race.
  • Marshals and officials are all volunteers and they are giving up there time to enable the race to go ahead.  Please treat them with courtesy and respect. Verbal abuse towards marshals will not be tolerated and will result in disqualification. If there is a dispute please refer to the race referee.
  • No outside assistance. Duathlon is an individual endurance event and competitors must not get unfair assistance from friends or team mates. If you have a puncture or have mechanical problems on the bike once the race is in progress it is your responsibility to fix them yourself.
  • No Litter. PLEASE DO NOT DROP LITTER IN TRANSITION OR ON THE COURSE. If you need to take energy bars, gels etc. make sure that you dispose of the wrappers appropriately.

Safety

You are responsible for your own safety. The bike leg takes place on open roads and competitors are subject to normal road traffic regulations at all times. Marshals have no authority to control traffic. Marshals will be at key locations to indicate the direction of the route to competitors. All the turns (with one exception) are left hand turns at give way junctions. However there are two turns that need special care.

  • Ushaw Moor. B6302 Broom Lane across White House Lane into B6302 Cockhouse Lane. This is a dog leg corner with left hand turn followed by an immediate right hand turn, facing down a steep hill in the village centre. IT IS MANDATORY TO STOP AT THE FIRST JUNCTION AND PUT ONE FOOT ON THE GROUND. A marshal will be posted to ensure every competitor stops. Those who do not will be disqualified.
  • Brancepeth. The descent from Stanley Crook is fast and competitors should take great care to slow down at the left turn junction in Brancepeth, where the route rejoins the main road A690.
