Club Info
Since it began in 1988 Durham Tri has played its part in organising many duathlons and triathlons, from local evening races to highly regarded regional events like the Prince Bishops Triathlon.
Events
The club currently runs a local summer & winter duathlon series based on Meadowfield Sports Centre. These are well organised, low-key, friendly, ‘no-pressure’ events which provide a perfect way of experiencing the sport for first-time competitors and which allow the grizzled veterans to keep track of their training progress. Keep an eye on the calendar to see when the next event is to be held.
We also host – in conjunction with Durham City Council – the City of Durham Duathlon again based around Meadowfield Sports Centre. This has proved to be an extremely popular event for many years and attracts some of the region’s top duathletes.
In partnership with Ryton Triathlon Club we also host the Prince Bishops Triathlon centred on Derwent Reservoir and its surrounding lanes. This is a rugged Olympic-distance event that has been used as a regional championships and age-group world championships event. A ‘Sprint Distance’ event is also held for those who prefer their triathlons in handier-sized packs.
Training
To help get you to the start line the club organises various weekly coached training sessions. Track running sessions are held at Maiden Castle Sports Centre where we concentrate on speed work.
Pool-based swimming sessions are held at Wolsingham pool on Friday evenings and Durham pool on Saturday evenings. From May throughout the summer, open-water swimming sessions are held for those with wetsuits at Ellerton Lake near Scorton, Richmondshire and at Hetton Lyons Lake, Hetton-le-Hole.
A Sunday bike run leaves from the car park of ‘The Lodge’ pub on the A167 at Crossgate Moor just to the west of Durham City.
Triathlon club members throughout the North-East also receive expert coaching very cheaply through Triathlon North-East, part of the British Triathlon Association to whom Durham Tri is affiliated.
Social
Durham Tri prides itself on being a friendly and inclusive club and takes every opportunity to organise informal social events for its members who – although the club is centred on Durham City – come from all over the North-East.
