Just a short note to say a big thank you to Ian and Allan for terrific organisation at this morning's winter duathlon series. It was the first time on the new route and I can safely say, from what I heard, everyone was very pleased with this nice fast course. With a turn out of 33/34 participants the atmosphere was buzzy from the word go... right to the very end! We were blessed with clear skies and sunshine, though a bit nippy, but what more could you want! Wonderful day (though somewhat suffering with the legs now!).
Thanks also to Carole Seheult for keeping us right on the run! It was great to see so many newcomers and indeed familiar faces - bring on 15th November for event number two (check the website)!
See you all soon

Club Duathlon Report (16th July 2009 - Allan)

The heavy rain of the afternoon threatened but mostly held off for this, the last club duathlon under Kay's usual superb encouraging and enthusiastic direction. Her florescent yellow jacket and yellow bobble hat and her commanding manner light up a damp evening.
The 10 competitors were very encouraged by an enthusiastic band of supporters. The results are shown below. The fastest for each phase is shown in purple.
The main confrontation was a ding-dong battle between Hilary and Scott, both in blue, but the pace and the race were red hot, Scott prevailing by just 4 seconds.
Roz, Stuart and Neil are heroic special cases. As planned, Roz got back on her bike at the end of the second run to complete a further loop as part of her half-ironman training: the light was too poor to do a planned additional loop. Stuart went well off course after taking a wrong turn and didn't have time to do a second lap. Neil did extra by going to Brancepeth on both bike loops!
Many many thanks to Kay for such splendid enthusiastic running of the club duathlon over many years.
The Results spreadsheet is attached.

The next and final summer series duathlon this year will take place on Thursday 20 August, at Meadowfield.

Club Duathlon June 18 2009

Well, it didn’t look good at 6.30 as we waited in the carpark. Kay was huddled in her yellow jacket, I was safe from the weather under my stripy umbrella, Allan was well wrapped up, while Ken and Hillary were hiding in the van and Richard was undetected in his car. We knew there’d be no students [sadly], as [happily] they were racing round in their posh frocks and dinner suits at their end-of-year bash – hope you all had a great time! The weather had been threatening but pretty good all day, but just before 6.30 the rain came. And it was cold miserable rain. Gradually more faces appeared: Richard emerged, Owen rolled up, Ellen Ann, Graham, Simon, Scott, Neil and Corinna and various others... and about 6.50 we were rewarded with a weak sun in a patch of blue for the start, though it rained again later.
Eventually 5 and a half competitors lined up – Neil was in recovery and decided to just do Run 1. And Ellen Ann was doing her own thing on the run, the alternative grass run; she had an alternative bike route lined up too, but we discovered that later.
Things looked normal at the end of run 1. Ellen Ann’s shorter grass run meant she got off on the bike early, Richard had overtaken Simon, and Scott had made up some time on Hillary so that she was in his sights...
At the end of bike lap 1, Ellen Ann looked very fast with a 21 minute lap, Hillary and Scott taking over 24 minutes and Richard and Simon lapping in 26/27 minutes. Scott was taking time out of Hillary but she wasn’t making life easy for him.
Coming into transition 2, Ellen Ann had a cracking bike time of under 42 minutes. Richard continued to pull away from Simon, but the battle between Scott and Hillary was really shaping up. They finished together, Hillary just 1 length in front, so that Scott had made up his 1 minute handicap over her. And his first run had been faster that hers...
He lost a little time in transition, so Hillary managed to put 10 seconds of daylight between them at the start of the second run. It was shaping up for a sprint finish... but Hillary’s second run is usually strong, and she stretched the gap to 30 seconds at the end.
Looking at the bike times, Ellen Ann appeared to be a late flowering Beryl Burton, over 7 minutes faster that Scott and Hillary, so we went over the bike course with her, corner by corner... ooops! There is an alternative bike route from Langley Moor to New Brancepeth without going to Stonebridge and Ushaw Moor which explained that time! But she’s still fast!
So, the overall result:
1. Scott Watson 01:16:20
2. Hillary Ross 01:16:50
3. Richard Fearnside 01:24:20
4. Simon Robinson 01:35:20

Kay had an entertaining evening, breaking in Allan and me to this time-keeping role. And no jokes about a good woman needing 2 guys to replace her... she’s irreplacable! So hats off to you Kay, you’re Fantastic! This report is a collaborative effort by me and Allan – I haven’t figured out yet how to get the Function function to function in the spreadsheet so I’m passing it over to Allan.

Next month will be Kay’s last Duathlon in her organiser/timekeeper role. I’ll be away, so Allan will be her assistant.
It’s at the same place and time as usual, 6.30 for 7 at Meadowfield on Thursday July 16.
